In conjunction with Palo Alto Judo Club’s annual tournament, CENCO will be offering a Referee Clinic led by Gary Takemoto on 11/4/2017 (USJF SANCTION # 1711-12).

  1. Registration begins at 9:00 am
  2. Referee Clinic participants are requested to wear slacks and polo shirts
  3. Preregistration and weigh-in will be held at the following dojos: Chuck Jefferson Judo on Thursday, Nov 2nd, 5:30-7pm and San Jose Buddhist Judo Club on Nov 2nd, 7:00-9:00 pm. Please bring proof of membership to USJF/USJI/USJA. You will not need to register on the day of the tournament if you have preregistered.
  • The Palo Alto Invitational will have BOTH a Shiai and Kata competition. Please see tournament forms for details.
  • The tournament is being held at Menlo-Atherton High School
  • A competitor can only sign up for only one division
  • Only Brown Belts and Intermediate Purple Belts will be allowed to compete “up” in the Black Belt divisions.
  • All competitors and their instructors are required to complete the “Certificate Regarding Non-Black Belt Contestants” on the entry form
  • Competitors will wear white and blue belts, depending on the side on which they are fighting; no other belts will be allowed.
    Competitors are required to provide their own white and blue belts. If you wear white and blue gis, you don’t need to use the white and blue belts; however, if you plan on wearing a blue gi in competition, you must also have a white gi to wear as needed. You will not be allowed to wear a blue gi on the white side.

Pooling: Please see attached age and weight categories. Divisions may be combined at the discretion of the tournament committee to optimize competition and safety.
Competitors 10 or under may have coed pools.

Scoring System: Place winners will be determined by wins first, then by points, as follows:
Ippon 5, Waza-ari 3, Shido or Decision 1

Each pool will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals.
Match Time:
Matches are 3 minutes with a golden score period of no more than 1-minute except for the Black Belt Divisions. Black Belts will have 4 minute matches with current golden score rules.
Contest Rules: Current IJF rules will be used with the following modifications:
Mat size will be at least 6 meters with a 4 meter border between mats and 3 meter on outside border;
The CARE system will not be used;
No kansetsu-waza (armlocks) in divisions below black belt;

No shime-waza (chokes) and double knee drop below 13 years of age.
Competitors who lose by Hansokumake because of “kikengachi” will not be allowed to continue. Hansokumake as a result of 3 shidos will only lose that match.
Non-Black Belt contestants will be allowed medical examination during their matches. Black Belt divisions will use current IJF rules concerning medical examination and Hansokumake.
Women wearing headscarves will be able to compete, as long as it does not interfere with kumikata. If it comes off during newaza, no “Mate” shall be called.

1. The entry form fully completed with details of:
• The katas you are entering
• Whether you are Tori or Uke

• Membership information, including membership number
• Total amount of fees you are sending
2. Waiver form completed and signed
3. Entry fees (checks should be made out to Soko Joshi Judo Club)

Deadlines and Entry Fees
Early Registration: Entries received up to and including September 26 $40 per kata per person for the first three katas entered (that is, $120 per person for three katas); $15 per kata per person for any additional katas entered.
Example: Jane Smith is competing in seven katas with three different partners. She will pay 3 x $40 ($120) + 4 x $15 ($60) = $180.
Late Registration: Entries received after September 26 and up to and including October 3: Add a one-time “Late” fee of $40 to the above fees.
Example: If Jane Smith’s entries are received on October 3, her total fee will be $180 + $40 = $220.

Make checks payable to Soko Joshi Judo Club. Bring your USJI, USJF, or USJA membership card on the day of tournament.

Entry forms, waivers, and checks must be received by the deadlines above. Email may be used for questions and other correspondence, but all entry forms must be mailed via hardcopy.

Tournament Rules
All matches will be conducted using the current contest rules for Judo as stipulated by the International Judo Federation (IJF), with the following modifications:
1. The following techniques will not be permitted for contestants 12 years of age and under:
1. Shime-Waza (Choking techniques)
2. Double Drop-Knee Seoinage
2. Kansetsu-Waza (Joint lock techniques) will be allowed in the Black Belt divisions only.
3. The illegal application of techniques in #1 or #2 will result in Hansoku Make (loss of that match).
4. Judogi check for non-black belts will follow the pre-2009 rules and allow the contestant to change judogi.
5. Blue and white judogi (or alternatively, white judogi with blue and white belt) are required for all contestants.
6. CARE system will not be use. Matches will be officiated by referee assisted by 2 judges.
7. Contest areas will be 6.5m x 6.5m with a 4m safety area.

Scoring

1. Only wazari and ippon will be scored. All penalties will be called.
2. Shido penalties will not determine the outcome of the match. If scores are tied at end of regulation match time, match will go to Golden Score.

3. The winning contestant in each match will be awarded points, according to the level of win, as follows:
a. Ippon 10 points
